Condition of BELONGING

According to Quaglia, a school needs to consider policies, practices, procedures and curricula so that they foster a sense of belonging.

Actions that promote a sense of belonging:
  • Using students' first names
  • Making eye contact and greeting when they come in
  • Field trips
  • Activities for the purpose of belonging such as bowling, movie night
  • Snacks
  • Pictures of them posted on wall
  • Their work posted on wall
  • Actively engage right away
  • Text and call every day when they are not here
  • Course completion [progress] celebrations
  • Celebrations and recognitions as a group
  • Involving students in program decisions
  • Advisors and supervisor visiting classrooms and interacting with the students
  • Accepting students for who they are
